Lee Friedlander wint Hasselblad award

American photographer Lee Friedlander has been awarded the 2004 Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography for five decades of documentary photography, the organization said Tuesday.

Friedlander, 71, was honored for being "among the most significant, inventive and influential contemporary photographers, with a lifetime achievement spanning the last 50 years," the foundation said. "His work embodies a 'new documentary paradigm,' in which stylistic innovations and freedom from established formal practices has influenced the work of subsequent generations of photographers."

The prize, 500,000 kronor ($74,000) and a gold medal, will be presented at a ceremony on Nov. 19 in Goteborg, southwestern Sweden. An exhibit featuring his works will also be displayed at the Hasselblad Center in Goteborg.

Friedlander, a native of Aberdeen, Wash., ventured into photography as a 14-year-old and studied at the Art Center School in Los Angeles before working as a freelance photographer for magazines like Esquire, Sports Illustrated, McCall's and Collier's.

Friedlander's works have been exhibited in museums around the world, and several collections of his photographs have been published as books. He belongs to a generation of American photographers "who reinvented the documentary photography," the foundation said.

The Erna and Victor Hasselblad Foundation promotes scientific education and research in natural sciences and photography.
